You can’t eat – or herbalize – your way to happiness. True happiness requires driving forces of: congruence between your mission (your inner calling) and your actions, heartfelt contribution, good doses of challenge, creative expression, connection with others, and lots of love.

Mucuna

A top pick out of the multi-thousand-herb Ayurvedic system, the traditional bean pod extract of Mucuna pruriens contains serotonin, 5-HTP, and a whopping dose of the neurotransmitter precursor L-Dopa. L-Dopa converts to dopamine, which is required for proper brain function and is easily depleted by stress, drugs and alcohol. Best news: an extract usually tastes really good, like peanut powder with a kick.

Reishi mushrooms

Reishi is the queen of mushrooms. After inoculating a log or dead plant matter, reishi produces a shiny red fruitbody. Blend in a food processor for 5- 10 minutes:

 

5 cups soaked (2 – 24 hours) organic pumpkin seeds (approximately 3 1/2 unsoaked pumpkin seeds)

2/3 cup cold pressed organic olive oil

1/2 cup soaked (or not soaked, no biggy!) organic raw sunflower seeds

1/2 cup chopped ripe organic bell pepper

1/3 cup raw organic sesame tahini

1 – 2 tablespoons organic unpasturized sauerkraut

1 tablespoon raw organic dark-colored miso of choice

1 tablespoon sea salt

1 tablespoon dried oregano

1 tablespoon fresh de-stemmed rosemary

1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon organic ground cayenne

juice of 1 lemon

4 cloves organic garlic

OPTIONAL (but choose at least 1 to make this a truly detoxifying and super nitrifying burger!):

1 – 2 tablespoons zeolite powder (deeply detoxes environmental toxins from your body)

1 – 2 tablespoons richly brewed herbal tea of prepared rhemannia and shisandra berries (such a great “grilled” burger flavor, not to mention youth-building power)

1 tablespoon medicinal mushroom powder of choice (immunity with meaty flavor)

 

When somewhat smooth, add:

 

1 cup chopped peeled organic onion

1/2 cup chopped fresh organic leafy herbs of choice (cilantro is great! so is parsley!)

 

Blend lightly for 10 seconds or until onion and herbs are mixed but still somewhat chunky. Using a spatula, make over a dozen 4-5 inch patties on sheeted dehydrator trays or parchment paper covered baking tray. Dehydrate in dehydrator at 145*F for 2 hours or place in a convection oven at the lowest heat possible (avoid going over 160*F. If your highest setting is much higher simply turn off the heat after 20 minutes but keep the convection fan on. Reheat as needed.) for 4 hours. Flip and continue to dehydrate in dehydrator/oven for at least 1 hour before serving or up to 12 more hours for a chewier burger.

Serve warm with a salad and other organic richly nutritious recipes of choice.

Written-out recipe:

Step 1: Simmer 20+ minutes in pot your tonic herb tea consisting of:
2 cups spring water
2 teaspoons shisandra berries (chopped)
2 teaspoons goji berries (chopped)
couple pinches prepared he shou wu
1/4 cup sliced and chopped reishi mushroom
1 tablespoon gynostemma
2 teaspoons rehmannia root

**All herbs can be ordered from Mountain Rose Herbs.**

Step 2: Make nut and seed mylk:
1 quart spring water
2 teaspoons almonds butter (I used soaked, dehydrated, stone ground almond butter made at home)
2 teaspoons chia seeds
1 teaspoon poppy seeds
big handful of soaked hazel nuts
big handful of soaked pecans
2 teaspoons hemp seeds
hot/warm tea from step 1, strained

Blend in a high-speed blender on high for 1 minute and strain through 3 nut mylk bags (1 inside the other for reenforcement) into a large bowl. Then pour back into blender.

Step 3: Add in remaining ingredients:
1 tablespoon raw cacao butter
2 teaspoons maca powder
1 teaspoon pine pollen
2 teaspoons raspberry powder
1 teaspoon coconut oil
small handful fresh blueberries
1 pinch bee pollen
1/2 teaspoon Bee Mana (royal jelly powder)
2 tablespoon birch xylitol
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean powder
about 1/2 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder (or use less if your are sensitive to stevia’s flavor)

Blend on high for at least 1 minute. Taste. Add more stevia if desired.

Step 4: Add in green ingredients and ice:
3 cups spring water ice cubes
1 – 2 teaspoons Chlorella
1 – 2 teaspoons Vitamineral Green

Blend on high for 10 seconds or until ice is homogenized. Serve in your favorite glass and share the love!

RECIPE:

1 cup tonic herb tea

1 cup organic pecans, soaked

1/2 cup soaked and spouted black wild rice (soak in spring water for a day, rinsing a couple times)

2 large eggs, de-shelled (Vegans: Use a few dashes of non-GMO soy lecithin and a dash of olive oil instead)

4 Brazil nuts, soaked

1 teaspoon chia seed

Blend on high in a high-speed blender for 45 seconds. Strain through 3 nut mylk bags (1 inside the other to create a 3 layered bag) into a bowl. Pour back into a clean blender and add:

3 tablespoons Dandy Blend (herbal, gluten-free coffee flavoring powder)

2 tablespoons birch xylitol

1 tablespoon cold pressed olive oil

1/4 teaspoon stevia extract powder (KAL and NOW brands have a great non-bitter flavor). Use a dash more to taste.

Few pinches sea salt

Blend well. Pour into a bowl and place in freezer for several hours or pour into an ice cream maker if you have one. Serve in rounded scoops, sprinkle with blue green flakes, vanilla bean powder, and drizzle with warm my low-glycemic chocolate sauce:

LOW-GLY CHOCOLATE SAUCE RECIPE

1/4 cup birch xylitol

1/4 cup raw cacao powder

3 tablespoons tonic herb tea or spring water

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 teaspoon raw almond butter

1 pinch stevia extract powder

Blend in a blender on medium-low for 5 – 10 minutes or until all the xylitol crystals are dissolved. Pour into jar or bowl and warm in low-temperature oven for a few minutes before serving on ice creme.

Note that my Low-Gly Chocolate Sauce recipe is proportionately high in birch xylitol. Be careful not to have too much at once or the xylitol will make your stomach uncomfortable. My other xylitol-sweetened recipes usually have a low, diluted amount of xylitol where it doesn’t pose this issue, but in this case – to replace typical sugar syrup content of all other chocolate sauce recipes – I used more of the very low glycemic birch xylitol.

Blend on high for 1 minute and strain through 3 nut mylk bags (1 bag inside the other to create a 3-layered bag) into a large bowl. Pour back into the blender and then add:

 

2 tablespoons birch xylitol or wholesome sweeteners of choice

1 teaspoon vanilla bean powder

¼ teaspoon stevia extract powder or ½ teaspoon for full sweetness (KAL brand and NOW brand are great tasting)

 

Blend on high for 15 seconds and then pour most into a pitcher leaving 1 cup in blender, then add to blender:

 

¼ cup organic raw cacao powder

1 tablespoon birch xylitol or wholesome sweeteners of choice

¾ teaspoon freshly squeeze organic lemon juice

1/2 – 1 teaspoon Longevity Power LEVITY

 

Blend lightly. Set up your fudgecicle molds and pour the vanilla malt gelato (in pitcher) and chocolate butterscotch gelato (in blender) into the molds simultaneously to create a swirl of light and dark cream. Superfood Seaweed Soup Recipe

1 quart spring water (or less for a thicker soup)

2 cups freshly brewed hot tea of reishi mushroom slices, ginseng, other medicinal mushrooms, goji berries and other tonic herbs of choice

1/4 cup organic unpasteurized miso (chickpea rocks!)

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/4 cup (or up to 1 cup) whole sea vegetables of choice (kelps, dulse, etc.)

2 cloves garlic

squeeze of lemon juice

OPTIONAL: more spices like cayenne, chipotle, peppercorn, etc.

 

Blend on high in a high-speed blender for 2-3 minutes. Should be warm with sea vegetables well blended. Enjoy in your favorite mug.

 

Ashwaganda Super Cacao Shake Recipe

1  quart spring water

2 cups freshly brewed hot tea of reishi mushroom slices, ginseng, other medicinal mushrooms, goji berries and other tonic herbs of choice

1 1/2 raw organic pumpkin seeds, soaked

1 1/2 raw organic Brazil nuts, soaked

1 tablespoon chia seed gel (1 part chia seeds mixed with 2 parts spring water, let sit for at least an hour)

 

Blend on high in a high-speed blender until smoth. Pore into a 3-layered nut-mylk bag (3 nut mylk bags, one inside the other) over a bowl. Squeeze the herbal nut mylk out and remove and compost the pulp that remains inside the bags. Pore the nut mylk back into the blender pitcher and add:

 

1 tablespoon raw cacao butter

1 tablespoon raw cacao powder

1 tablespoon ashwagandha extract powder

1 teaspoon raw maca powder

1/2 – 1 teaspoon sea salt

few dashes vanilla bean powder

few dashes to taste KAL brand or NOW brand organic stevia extract powder

 

Blend on high until smooth. Strain through the same empty 3-layered nut-mylk bag into the same bowl. Squeeze the bags to create a very smooth warm chocolate mylk. Pore back into the blender pitcher and add:

 

2 teaspoons afa wild blue green algae

2 – 3 cups spring water ice cubes

 

Blend briefly until ice is mostly smooth. Serve in your favorite glass or bottle the whole thing in a half-gallon mason jar. Lasts about 48 hours refrigerated. Drink and stay empowered!

In my new video “High Fruit? Low Fruit? Or…?,” I share an insight regarding the latest Internet health debates on sweet fruit intake, high sugar/low sugar, raw food, wild food, and indigenous-style eating. I have found that you can have your ultra healthful cake and eat it too…with a little-known clever food preparation.

All ancient and modern cultures have fermented foods. They take sugar-containing foods (some foods that are  edible raw/unfermented and foods that are not truly edible until fermentation) and subject them to a fermentation process (wines, kefirs, yogurts, cheeses, beers, sauerkrauts, sourdough bread, etc.) to create a NEW food. This new food – or ferment – has gone through a biological medium (usually a symbiotic colony of lactobacilli (good bacteria) and yeasts (good fungi) that eats up the sugar and turns it into more probiotic bacteria, amino acids, B vitamins, and a huge amount of co-factor nutrients that do wonders for our health.

This is sprouted oats blended with kefir grains and spring water. This will ferment to create the base of a raw sourdough bread.

A ferment typically takes 36 hours to many months to finish depending on the ferment and thus it can do what our own intestines (which are also rich in good bacteria and yeasts) cannot because our digestive process should be 24 hours or less. For the hardcore raw food simplicity eaters who think that we can skip ferments, this is a big concept to accept.

We must also accept the fact that most agricultural food (from the farm and the garden) has undergone a multi-generational genetic change through selective breeding based on farmer’s preference, which typically makes a food bigger (less nutrient dense), sweeter (too much sugar than we need) and less bitter (not enough medicines, which act to nourish our body’s immune system, endocrine system, nervous system, etc.). On the flip side, we must also accept that a lot of wild

food is often very small, not pleasantly sweet, and too high in bitters (too many alkloids can be toxic to consume strait).

Interestingly, fermentation can be a solution to rendering BOTH the agricultural foods and the highly medicinal wild foods into a more ideal food for us humans to consume: a ferment.

For example, agricultural fruits have too much sugar for most people to handle without spiking blood sugar. However, if we ferment fruits in a controlled manner we end up with a low-sugar beverage that is even more nutritious than the fruit itself. We also can take highly medicinal food and let a ferment break down some of the harsh alkaloids. Wild cruciferous (and to some extent domesticated cruciferous too like the common cabbages) have goitrogens (thyroid function suppressors), but upon fermenting them into a sauerkraut the goitrogens are broken down. The phytates (anti-nutrients that block our absorption of certain nutrients) in seeds can be broken down through sprouting (which is similar to fermentation in that you are activating an enzymatic process via soaking seeds in water) and fermenting when making seed mylk kefirs/yogurts.

Most fermented products available at your local health food store are NOT organic and are often adulterated with extra cane sugar and preservatives. Or in the case of many store-bought kombuchas,

the kombucha ferment is just not DONE yet, and thus a lot of sugar still remains to be eaten and turned into other nutrients. Organic unpasteurized sauerkrauts are easy to find, but all the other ferments are few and far between: raw kefirs, organic pure meads and ciders, organic pure vinegars (other than apple cider vinegar)…these varieties of ferments are not conveniently available for us high-quality seekers yet. Thus I hope my article and video inspire you to start making your own from scratch so that you can have a variety of ferments to add into your regimen. Do some research online and start making your own kefirs and other ferments in your own kitchen.
