To your loooooong lasting physical fitness!
You can’t eat – or herbalize – your way to happiness. True happiness requires driving forces of: congruence between your mission (your inner calling) and your actions, heartfelt contribution, good doses of challenge, creative expression, connection with others, and lots of love.
BUT! With the amount of toxins and stress in the human experience these days and a dietary history that seriously lacked the building blocks for a thriving nervous system, healthy glands and vital organs, a “happy” immune system, and a beaming healthy heart, sometimes sustained happiness just isn’t chemically available.
It’s no wonder there is such a huge preponderance of the antidepressant SSRI’s (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) that medicate the population. Antidepressants have side effects, are addictive, never treat the actual base problem, and ultimately suck the sense of personal power and happiness right out of someone.
I digress. Your ancestors took pride in a rich life rich in herbs and took part in traditional herbal medicine of their corresponding successful human cultures. It is our birthright to get back to the basics – the top herbal basics that set your biochemstry up for happiness and make us more stress resistant.
The following top 5 herbs for happiness have evidence of thousands of years of usage in human history (I have also personally used them for years):
A top pick out of the multi-thousand-herb Ayurvedic system, the traditional bean pod extract of Mucuna pruriens contains serotonin, 5-HTP, and a whopping dose of the neurotransmitter precursor L-Dopa. L-Dopa converts to dopamine, which is required for proper brain function and is easily depleted by stress, drugs and alcohol. Best news: an extract usually tastes really good, like peanut powder with a kick.
Reishi is the queen of mushrooms. After inoculating a log or dead plant matter, reishi produces a shiny red fruitbody. All parts of reishi (fruitbody, spores and mycelium) are rich in polysaccarides which plug into the receptor sites of your immune system and train it to be more intelligent. Read more about how reishi does that HERE.
Reishi has a particularly calming effect in the millions of subjects who take it daily. It makes for a very happy nervous system and seems to “work on you” cumulatively over months and years of taking it. It is the perfect spiritual growth tool. Reishi fruitbody tea and tincture are great, but the best bang is to get fruitbody extract powder and cracked-cell spores and take daily.
Like reishi, all medicinal mushrooms do wonders for the body. There are dozens but the next 2 to add in to your life after reishi to support happiness are wildcrafted chaga mushroom and wildcrafted poria mushroom.
Noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia) is the top superfood of the Pacific coastal and island traditions. Noni contains many trace elements and a large amount of polysaccharides which are immune system food. Noni imparts vigor and will in those who consume it.
Fresh noni is best. But when you are away from the tropics where it grows a cold-extracted powder is awesome (and doesn’t have quite the sulfur taste as the fresh stuff)).
Goji berry ain’t a raisin (no offense to grapes.) This orange gem is rich in carotenoids, polysacarides, all essential amino acids, trace minerals and vitamins. A handful of high quality dried but soft goji berries always impart a lift in mood in those that comply. To get more out of goji without the natural sugar content, an extract powder goes well with everything.
Ginseng is the most popular eastern herb in the west. But did you know that there are many kinds of ginseng? The main 2: Panax ginseng originates in Asia and American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) grows wild in many places in North America. Ginseng’s phytochemicals are complex and after thousands of years of usage and thousands of scientific studies, it has been proven that it’s not one chemical that provides benefit, but all the chemicals of ginseng combined in a full-spectrum extract that provide bliss-enducing energy, immune system enhancement, and libido boosting power.
Here’s 5 more:
Polygala root – Known as the will-builder in taoist tonic herbalism. It relaxes the mind, calms the emotions, aids the sleep process, and all while boosting sexual vitality.
Red Asparagus root – Known as the “levitation herb,” this cooling substance tonifies the reproductive ability and makes one feel very light and serene.
St. John’s Wort – More than 30 double-blind studies show St. John’s Wort to be as effective as the prescription antidepressants Zoloft and Prozac but with far fewer side effects.
Kava – Bliss out all day safely with this herb. Decrease muscle tension and reduce stress and anxiety without lowering your mental faculties. Kava is fun.
Holy Basil – The green leafy adaptogen tonic is very antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory. A top ayurvedic herb, this herb is always associated with yogic bliss.
All the great tonic herbs and superfoods from around the world boost your body’s ability to sustain happiness and to feel a deep sense of energy and nourishment. The few great ones above truly embody happiness.
