The #1 thing I consume – besides spring water – is my Tonic Herbal Skyrocket Elixir. I wish to share with you this most important recipe I have ever created, and perhaps will ever create.

But before I do, let us put into perspective something about food and medicine. And by these 2 categories of edibles I mean:

Food (caloric foods – macronutrient dominant)
&
Medicine (herbs – micronutrient dominant)

Foods will come and go. Today, your body might absolutely thrive on almonds. Tomorrow, you may get an allergic reaction from almonds (they are after all an agriculturally tweaked food, usually harvested from grafted limbs on trees, but I dirges). Almonds are in the food category. All foods are like this – we need to rotate them regularly – or sometimes give some up for a while.

Name any food or food type, and people have healed by simply abstaining from it.

Herbs – specifically tonic herbs (plants and mushrooms and their extracts appropriate and safe for daily use – herbs that impart cumulative effects with ongoing near-daily usage over a lifetime) don’t need to be rotated as much. Taking small breaks from tonic herbs has benefit, but for the most part taking more of or more consistently the renowned roots, barks, mushrooms, berries and leaves known as tonics dramatically improves one’s immune system and ability to resist stress.

Name any traditionally used tonic herb, and millions of people have healed by simply taking it daily.

Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food.” Whenever I hear this quote, I gawk and think that’s so deep, man. The latter half of the quote is what my recipe is all about. Let medicine be thy food. So deep!

I have found that my diet is no longer centered around food – because my food ingredients change day to day, year to year. My diet is centered around hydration and tonic herbs – the great tonic herbs like reishi mushroom, chaga mushroom, astragalus, goji berry, maca, and many more. Even when I fast and cleanse, it’s centered around tonic herbs and hydration.

I present to you the easiest, fastest, potent, most hydrating and mouthwatering, adaptable and adaptogenic Herbal Tonic Skyrocket Elixir Recipe. I make 3-4 of these per day to stay hydrated and strong!

Herbal Tonic Skyrocket Elixir

Herbal Tonic Skyrocket Elixir Recipe:

Blend in blender for 15 seconds:

3 cups spring water

1 1/2 cups spring water ice cubes

1 tablespoon tonic herb extracts

1/4 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder or sweetener of choice, to taste

Let foam settle (you can blend in the stevia last to reduce how much ‘foam head’ is created) and serve in glass – or a mason jar to take with you on the go.

The 1 tablespoon tonic herb extracts part is up to you. What do you want to add in to your life today? You could start with medicinal mushroom extracts, or goji berry extract, or black maca extract, or everyone’s favorite, He Shou Wu.

I have created 7 products that I have found to be the most critical, most powerful, and most appropriate for near-daily use. Give them a try, and experience the deep restorative powers of high-end tonic herbs and superfood extracts. This is medicine that is always there for you, always nutritive, always mood-lifting, always deeply energizing, stress reducing and nourishing to your nervous system, endocrine system and organs.

If you have any questions about tonic herbs, please ask away in the comments section below. I’ll be right here to answer.

It’s time to show you my latest in superfood creations: My Off the Hook Superfood Ghee Ice Cream which features some ancient foods to help you succeed at your allergy free high nutrition living so that you can make your health and fitness goals come true!

You’ll notice in the title that I did not say ‘Dairy Free.’ Keep an open mind as I explain. I’m about to introduce to you  something that is neither vegan, nor raw. Okay, it’s an all out cooked animal product.

I know, I know… you’re thinking “Christian…my bro… I’m into adding in more raw plant foods into my life, not more cooked animal foods. You must be trippin.’ ”

IMG_0232

Let me explain. I’m into balance, not labeling myself (but I am into labels on food products and I am for labeling of GMOs!); I love adding in the very best from every tradition. I’m into the cleansing aspects of hardcore raw vegan approaches, but several years (yep, I was a raw vegan for that long) of avoiding animal products just starts to feel bad. The body aches for what it needs.

According to a several thousand year old vegetarian/mostly vegetarian tradition practiced by billions of people called Ayurveda, this cooked animal fat is considered life itself. Whoa! It’s called Ghee. And it’s what the Ayurvedic doctor ordered.

For all the people who aren’t ready to try ghee, I won’t be pushy. I’m going to give you strategic and tasty options to make this ice cream a vegan/dairy free one, but I also invite (gently persuade) you to try an amazing ingredient which is the only milk product I regularly ‘do’ at this time (or maybe will ever do because all other forms of dairy except this one give me a mucus reaction): Ghee.

Freshly made ghee in glass

Ghee is the traditional Ayurvedic clarified butter. It’s pure butter oil with nearly 100% of the casein, lactose, milk solids and water removed. It’s made from organic grass-fed cow butter. Butter is 80% oil, 20% milk. Ghee is 100% oil, 0% milk. It’s pure essential fats – like coconut oil or cacao butter, but it’s an animal product and is high in CLA (Conjugated linoleic acids), a category of fatty acids that has been shown to have anticancer properties, strengthen immune function, and help the human body healthfully burn fat and healthfully reduce body fat deposits.

And yet it’s not raw. Ghee is made by cooking butter just above 200*F to coax the milk solids to separate off, leaving the pure butter oil. This process gives ghee a most enjoyable butterscotch flavor (before artificial flavors, butterscotch flavor was literally made from scorching butter, or ‘butter-scorch’.)

So why is ghee so fabulously healthy even though it is cooked? Well it’s just like coconut oil, which is highly resistant to oxidation from heat. Perhaps you have heard that coconut oil is consider the healthiest oil with which to cook. Well, I put coconut oil in 2nd place. Ghee is the most healthful to cook with and has an even higher smoking temperature. It’s healthy saturated fat content protects it from oxidation during heat. But, like all oils, ghee should be kept in glass, away from plastic and away from direct sunlight and be used as fresh as possible for the most health benefits.

I recommend Ancient Organics Ghee. These guys rock, are local to me (as is the farm they get their butter from), and obey the Ayurvedic details when they make the ghee (like only making it during the full or waxing moons.)

My Off the Hook Superfood Ghee Ice Cream Recipe tastes like vanilla butterscotch carmel with a hint of foresty goodness from all the adrenal-restoring tonic herbs in it.

Feel free to double this recipe.

Blend in blender on medium-high for at least 1 minute until very warm (so that the fats emulsify):

2 1/2 tablespoon ghee (or warm coconut oil or melted cacao butter, but ghee will give it the best ice cream flavor and texture without the ice cream allergens)

1 1/2 tablespoon non-GMO lecithin powder

1/2 can (7 oz) BPA-free canned full-fat organic coconut milk (Native Forest Organic Classic Coconut Milk is great)

1 free-range organic egg yolk or additional 1 teaspoon non-GNO lecithin powder (if you choose egg yolk, you are deciding for yourself how to handle raw egg yolk so use your very best judgement)

Then add and blend on high for 20 seconds:

2 tablespoons non-GMO glycerin (this is really low glycemic amazing stuff!) or sweetener of choice (honey, etc.)

1 1/2 tablespoons spring water

1 teaspoon Maca Bliss

1 teaspoon Goji Joy

1 teaspoon LEVITY Red Asparagus Root Extract Powder

1/2 teaspoon Prepared He Shou Wu extract powder

1/2 teaspoon ground vanilla bean

1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder (use less if you are sensitive to stevia, use a touch more if you love stevia!)

1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon sea salt, to taste

OPTIONAL: 1 teaspoon Longevity Spirulina (best tasting spirulina!)

Pour into an ice cream maker, or into a bowl to set for a few hours in the freezer. Scoop into a small serving bowl and drizzle with Edible Goddess Chocolate Gold (best chocolate sauce ever!) or my very low glycemic butterscotch-caramel sauce:

Butterscotch-Caramel Sauce Recipe

Stir until smooth in a small bowl using a small silicon spatula. Feel free to double or triple recipe:

1 tablespoon non-GMO glycerin (the zero-glycemic option) or any wholesome liquid sweetener of choice

1/2 teaspoon ghee or warm coconut oil

1/2 teaspoon LEVITY Red Asparagus Root Extract Powder

1 pinch KAL stevia extract powder, to taste

I like all my food gourmet, hit-the-spot, full-balanced-flavor, decadent, but also reeeeaaallly nutritious. Look at those 5 definitions again: gourmethit-the-spotfull-balanced-flavordecadent… & really nutritious. The last one – really nutritious – is most important, but let me continue before I blow your mind…

Today, we will keep those 5 definitions and add a helpful dose of bitter, but what you end up with is more nutritious. I could be talking about any food sweet or savory, but I’m talking about chocolate…raw chocolate. Bitter sweet creamy raw chocolate. You like, yes?

The recipe below is how you take the love-inducing, blissful experience of raw cacao (unadulterated chocolate) and crank up the bliss into a ‘gateway’ super-joy experience which will educate you or another chocolate partaker into what nutrition is supposed to be about: an uplifting, perception-changing, empowering ride that just might send you to a new level of health. If you like what I just said, then this chocolate is for you.

Medicinal ‘I’ll Make You Fall in Love with Bitter’ Raw Chocolate

Melt raw cacao butter ahead of time to about 100*F. Blend in a blender:

1/2 cup melted raw cacao butter

1/2 cup raw cacao powder

1/2 cup raw hemp seeds

2 tablespoons Longevity in a Bottle – My siganture product with 60 of the world’s greatest superfoods and herbs all extracted into one dosage for maximum vitality, immunity enhancement and resilience to stress.

2 tablespoons lucuma powder

1 tablespoon organic sunflower seed lecithin oil OR 1 tablespoon more raw cacao butter

1/2 – 1 teaspoon ground vanilla bean

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

1/8 teaspoon KAL stevia extract (use less if you are other than partial to stevia)

Pour into molds or ice cube trays and pop in the freezer for 30 minutes. If you used the sunflower seed lecithin oil, the chocolate will be somewhat soft at room temperature so store in the freezer or refrigerator. Serve everyone!

Conclusion: Is eating simply about flavor and getting calories? For most people it is, oddly. Most people, I regret to state, eat a low medicine diet. So food is mostly flavor and calories for them. When we add the medicinal compounds back into our meals through tonic herbs, superfoods, rich aromatic heirloom foods, and wild foods, then suddenly we have an eating experience which has a completely active effect on our nervous system. Our body lights up with antioxidants, our immune system finally gets its receptor sights impregnated, our cellular structure fills out with the proper saturation of minerals, and just maybe the body-mind-consciousness connection gets nourished too.

So, do you need to eat chocolate all the time to experience this? No, but combining the great superfoods and herbs with chocolate is the best ‘gateway’ experience for someone to fully feel what a medicinal food lifestyle is all about. In my experience, some people just won’t feel anything until they have enough chocolate (Hehe). It’s my deep desire to help you experience this food-medicine-connection as a way of activating your life’s potential so that you can thrive, live with passion, and do what you were meant to do here. To you!

P.S. Be on the lookout for a 2 day in-person raw chocolate making/training workshop in the SF Bay Area this spring 2013.

Disclaimer: Medicinal implies ‘food as medicine and medicine as food.’ It does not imply medical. Individuals takings medications and those with known medical conditions should consult with their holistic physician before using my products, my recipes or any nutritional product. Thank you for understanding.

My Energy-Chi (or Energy-Qi) Tonic is something you’ve never experienced before. The instant yet deeply restorative long-burning energy you get from this lightly creamy elixir is so epic, I had to make it the first drink I demonstrated at a recent potluck/longevity lecture I did in Mill Valley, CA.

If They Mated: Rich Superfood Smoothie + Ice Watery Herbal Elixir. Audience, can you guess what their offspring would look like? It’s my handsome Energy-Qi Tonic.

The key ingredient is my new Longevity Power product Maca Bliss, a powdered 10:1 extract of Black Maca. It’s sweet and creamy without the starch and sugar found in whole maca, plus it’s black maca which according to the research is more powerful than red, yellow and mixed color maca. As an extract it becomes a true herbal tonic, as well as a highly concentrated superfood. Serious anti-stress food for your endocrine system (hormones) and quite warming for the winter. Read more about what makes this product so exceptional HERE.

This one’s going to rock your world.

The research is in: Herbal tea making does wonders for your immune system, induces bliss, cuts cravings, and builds resilience to stress. That said, most people have replaced the 5000+ year old tradition of tea making with coffee, soda and really crappy beer. But if you’re reading this you know those crappy beer days are being happily phased out because making herbal tea is SO much more creative and fun, yet just as habitually simple and energizing.

I’ve made some pretty narly teas in my days. I felt so good from them, but the bitterness factor was in the “my family won’t drink this” level. I was boiling medicinal mushrooms, roots, green leafed herbs and very sour berries like schisandra berry all in one pot. Good times, still do it.

A’hem. Look, making myself and yourself healthier with bitter brews is just a small part of my mission. But the biggest part of my mission is to make really tasty (like gourmet hit-the-spot tasty) products that everyone loves AND are just as potent and life changing as the bitter stuff! Enter: My Ultimate Holiday Tea Recipe (So good, our mom’s will rave about it!)

This tea combines 2 of the tastiest teas humanity has ever created: chaga mushroom and mulling spices. Note: The ingredients are a cinch to get.

Mulling spices are nearly synonymous with pumpkin pie spice, chai spices, and wassail (a holiday alcoholic mixed drink – “Here we come a-wassailing…”) spices. You can buy organic cut and sifted mulling spice blends or you can buy each herb individually. Try you local natural food store for a blend. The basic organic mulling blend includes about equal parts:

Organic cinnamon (true Ceylon or Cassia)

Organic cloves

Organic allspice berries

Organic dried ginger bits

Organic dried or fresh orange peel

OPTIONAL: Star anise, smaller amount of ground nutmeg, and vanilla.

I get almost all my tea making herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Chaga mushroom: This mushroom breaks every rule of being a mushroom. Rule 1: Taste. Instead of the weird earthy taste, chaga tastes like vanilla extract. It actually has naturally occurring vanillin in it. Rule 2: Accessibility. You don’t have to wildcraft chaga at just the right season, you can simply order it all year ’round HERE. Rule 3: Price. When buying wild-mimicked chaga (small pieces or ground), it’s surprisingly cheap for being such a precious mushroom. And, you can brew the chaga over and over and it still keeps saturating the water with its beautiful dark brown pigments and medicinal compounds.

Wild chaga growing on a birch tree that I harvested during a trip to Maine this summer.

Why use Chaga? Chaga is the highest antioxidant whole herb ever documented. It’s about tied with the antioxidant level of raw cacao. Chaga is loaded with polysaccharides – healing sugars that rapidly improve the immune system. Chaga is the quintessential herb of Russia that Russian scientists continue to study and use themselves. Out of all the medicinal mushrooms, Chaga seems to be in second place – Reishi mushroom taking first prize in all around health benefits. Learn more about chaga and reishi in my article about them HERE.

The Ultimate Holiday Tea Recipe in 3 easy steps:

1. Place a handful of mulling spices and a handful of wildcrafted chaga mushroom (small chunks, cut and sifted, or granules) into your pot. Add spring water and simmer for 15-30 minutes or more. Add more water if brewing for more time – it’s okay to brew longer.

2. Let cool slightly (not burning hot, just very warm) and pour through a very fine strainer (or nut mylk bags) into a ceramic mug.

3. Add a tiny pinch of sea salt and a few pinches or drops of stevia extract to taste. Taste test and serve to everyone (You don’t even have to tell them how healthy it is!) for the best holiday cheer as we advance into the new year!

BONUS SECTION:

For those of you not satisfied with just chaga and mulling spices (and you know who you are), you can add in my new product Longevity in a Bottle. Simply add in 1-3 teaspoons while the tea simmers. It will impart a bit of a root beer flavor to your holiday tea but it won’t throw off the flavor. Yes, you can heat/cook/simmer Longevity in a Bottle without messing with its properties. It’s a good and fun idea actually. Enjoy!

To you taking your health to the next level throughout the holidays this year!

-Christian

I loved a cold glass of chocolate milk as a kid. And I still do, but these days I love recipes for vitality, immunity, and longevity that are very low in sugar and rich in superfoods. I have nothing against raw organic dairy but it gives me a bit of an allergic reaction so I chose to make this a non-dairy, nut/seed mylk based recipe. I present to you: my Superfood Chocolate Mylk in 2 easy steps:

STEP 1: Put in a blender and blend for 1 minute:

2 1/2 cups spring water

2 cups spring water ice cubes

3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon soaked organic raw almonds (or 1/2 cup dry raw almonds, soaked 12 hours)

1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder (fine powder)

2 teaspoons hemp seeds

2 teaspoons MELTED raw cacao butter

2 teaspoons organic cold-pressed olive oil

1 teaspoon lucuma powder

1/2 teaspoon Yoga Manna, Crystal Manna or algae of choice

1/2 teaspoon reishi extract powder or Longevity in a Bottle (coming soon!)

1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

1 small pinch organic cinnamon powder

STEP 2: Strain through 2 nut mylk bags (1 inside the other to create a 2-layered stronger bag) into a bowl, pour into glasses and serve fresh! Use the pulp left in the nut mylk bags as food for your compost.

Enjoy this fantastic combination of comfort food and superfood (your favorite combination, right?!)

A toast to your vitality!

-Christian

Nothing hits the nostalgia button at the end of summer quite like fresh snow cones. But of course genetically modified high-glycemic syrup with tap water ice is too old school for us. We want low glycemic superfood herbal snow cones!

This just in: you can make them yourself at home.

First make the tonic herb syrup. This is the non-glycemic version:

-2 tablespoons spring water

-1 tablespoon reishi extract powder (for super immunity, mental calm)

-1 tablespoon astragalus extract powder (for immune system modulation, DNA repair)

-1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder (non-glycemic sweetener)

-1 tiny pinch sea salt

OPTIONAL: If you have wintergreen tincture or extract, use a tiny bit for a fully traditional root beer flavor.

Place in a mortar and pestle and lightly grind for 1 minute until all the powders are dissolved.

That syrup version is intensely herbal and rich in stevia (which I love!). If you are not used to stevia or the bitterness of some herbs like reishi, use this version:

-1 tablespoon spring water

-1 – 4 tablespoons (to taste) wholesome syrup (coconut nectar, clear agave (the most neutral flavored), sunchoke syrup, maple syrup)

-1 tablespoon reishi extract powder

-1 tablespoon astragalus extract powder

-1 tiny pinch sea salt

-OPTIONAL: 1 pinch KAL stevia extract powder

OPTIONAL: If you have wintergreen tincture or extract, use a tiny bit for a fully traditional root beer flavor.

Place in a mortar and pestle and lightly grind for 1 minute until all the powders are dissolved.

Shaved ice:

If you have an ice shaver, use that. Otherwise if you have a food processor with a regular metal blade, place a couple handfuls of spring water ice cubes and let it rip until the ice cubes are powdered.

Form the powdered/shaved ice into balls and place in small bowls. Drizzle with syrup and serve on a hot day (or a warm night!)

For an even more exotic “root beer” flavor, use Longevity in a Bottle instead of reishi and astragalus.
