Take your health up a big notch daily with this quick and easy to make yet divinely tasting beverage! With only 5 ingredients (64 ingredients if you count every phenomenal superfood and herbal extract in Longevity in a Bottle) your compliance level will surely be high. Combining compliance with the best nutrition ever = you taking the right action to get results.

Easy Longevity Elixir Recipe

Put in any blender:

3 cups spring water

handful ice

2 teaspoons Longevity in a Bottle (or use Maca Bliss or Goji Joy)

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

stevia extract to taste

~I like KAL stevia extract powder the best. For people who don’t like stevia much I’ll use 1/16 teaspoon. For people who love stevia I’ll use 1/8 teaspoon. Most of the time I’ll use about 3/32 teaspoon.~

Blend. Let the foam dissolve for about 2 minutes. Serve in glass and enjoy your health journey!

The autumn rains here are kickin’ in the growth of humanity’s favorite vegetable: the cabbage. It’s time to take this staple and ferment the heaven out of it. Eat this Epic Holiday Sauerkraut with your Thanksgiving dinner or leave it for Santa, and you and your family will surely be jolly because this ferment imparts a heavenly amount of nutrition into your body.

The research by gastronaut Donna Gates shows that consuming at least one live fermented food a day dramatically improves one’s immune system and helps knock out the fungal overgrowth.

Sauerkraut – makes for an immunity boosting, bliss inducing probiotic concoction. Repeat after me: My digestion is heavenly.

A note about buying sauerkraut: I recommend you buy only organic and unpasturized sauerkraut. I love all the companies that make these. We buy 1-4 jars of live sauerkraut a week. But the flavors do get boring (ginger, beet, kimchi, ginger beet, kimchi, ginger, beet, kimchi, ZOINKS!) so it is boldly imperative you make your own, starting NOW in time for Thanksgiving and all those holidays occurring within range of your New Year’s health resolutions. 😉

The flavor tonight ladies and gentlemen is: Rich green cabbage with a zesty burst of cranberry, lemon, sage and rosemary in a way you’ve never experienced before!

The way the friendly bacteria produce their snappy lactic acid on your tongue while breaking down the cell walls of these fine ingredients will have you asking for 2…no…4 servings at least during dinner, give or take.

Epic Holiday Sauerkraut Recipe

Makes about 1/2 – 1 gallon.

You’ll need a food processor with the slicing disc or just a lot of time with a cutting board and a chef’s knife. Remember to curl the tips of your fingers back to avoid cutting yourself please.

Place in a large bowl:

2 large organic green cabbages. Peel and compost the dirty outer leaves. Peel a couple more leaves, set aside. Chop rest to be able to fit through your food processor shoot.

1/2 large onion. Peel outer skin and largely chop.

10 cloves organic garlic. Peel.

big handful washed medium multi-color heirloom carrots. Or any organic carrots.

2 handfuls organic cranberries. Avoid the soft, yucky over-ripe berries. Just use firm washed ones.

OPTIONAL: 3 stalks of celery. Chopped.

Push entier bowl contents into food processor with slicing disc. Empty the food processor every time it gets full into another large bowl.

Place the following into a blender:

3/4 cup spring water

1 very large chopped organic lemon cucumber

juice of 2 lemons

small handful of garden sage. Fresh or dried, either way.

small handful of rosemary. Fresh is best.

2 tablespoons sea salt

1/4 teaspoon cayenne

a fermenting starter. Either juice of a well-done batch of sauerkraut, kefir grains, or an emptied-our capsule of high quality probiotic powders.

OPTIONAL: handful of dulse. For added immunity boosting, high mineral, and stuffing-flavored abundance.

Blend for about 10 seconds, liquidized but not smooth. Pour into bowl of grated vegetables. Massage with clean hands for a couple minutes and get things juicy.

Pour into a non-metal large bowl. Press down and get the juices almost rising to the top. If the juices don’t go that high yet, it doesn’t matter, they will during fermentation. Cover with the clean peeled cabbage leaves set aside earlier. Cover that with upside plates, a few stacked for added weight to press the veggies down so the juices rise up. Don’t use really nice plates as they may become stained by the phyco-pigments (antioxidants!) in the sauerkraut. Covere with a very clean towel. Keep cool (not warm, not cold) for about a week. After a week, transplant into glass jars and store in fridge. Serve to loved ones.

BONUS Recipe: Use this sauerkraut to make The Goddess Mash (a quick’n’easy recipe that’s divinely rich and satisfying)!

Happy Holidays!

Christian

This one’s going to rock your world.

The research is in: Herbal tea making does wonders for your immune system, induces bliss, cuts cravings, and builds resilience to stress. That said, most people have replaced the 5000+ year old tradition of tea making with coffee, soda and really crappy beer. But if you’re reading this you know those crappy beer days are being happily phased out because making herbal tea is SO much more creative and fun, yet just as habitually simple and energizing.

I’ve made some pretty narly teas in my days. I felt so good from them, but the bitterness factor was in the “my family won’t drink this” level. I was boiling medicinal mushrooms, roots, green leafed herbs and very sour berries like schisandra berry all in one pot. Good times, still do it.

A’hem. Look, making myself and yourself healthier with bitter brews is just a small part of my mission. But the biggest part of my mission is to make really tasty (like gourmet hit-the-spot tasty) products that everyone loves AND are just as potent and life changing as the bitter stuff! Enter: My Ultimate Holiday Tea Recipe (So good, our mom’s will rave about it!)

This tea combines 2 of the tastiest teas humanity has ever created: chaga mushroom and mulling spices. Note: The ingredients are a cinch to get.

Mulling spices are nearly synonymous with pumpkin pie spice, chai spices, and wassail (a holiday alcoholic mixed drink – “Here we come a-wassailing…”) spices. You can buy organic cut and sifted mulling spice blends or you can buy each herb individually. Try you local natural food store for a blend. The basic organic mulling blend includes about equal parts:

Organic cinnamon (true Ceylon or Cassia)

Organic cloves

Organic allspice berries

Organic dried ginger bits

Organic dried or fresh orange peel

OPTIONAL: Star anise, smaller amount of ground nutmeg, and vanilla.

I get almost all my tea making herbs from Mountain Rose Herbs.

Chaga mushroom: This mushroom breaks every rule of being a mushroom. Rule 1: Taste. Instead of the weird earthy taste, chaga tastes like vanilla extract. It actually has naturally occurring vanillin in it. Rule 2: Accessibility. You don’t have to wildcraft chaga at just the right season, you can simply order it all year ’round HERE. Rule 3: Price. When buying wild-mimicked chaga (small pieces or ground), it’s surprisingly cheap for being such a precious mushroom. And, you can brew the chaga over and over and it still keeps saturating the water with its beautiful dark brown pigments and medicinal compounds.

Wild chaga growing on a birch tree that I harvested during a trip to Maine this summer.

Why use Chaga? Chaga is the highest antioxidant whole herb ever documented. It’s about tied with the antioxidant level of raw cacao. Chaga is loaded with polysaccharides – healing sugars that rapidly improve the immune system. Chaga is the quintessential herb of Russia that Russian scientists continue to study and use themselves. Out of all the medicinal mushrooms, Chaga seems to be in second place – Reishi mushroom taking first prize in all around health benefits. Learn more about chaga and reishi in my article about them HERE.

The Ultimate Holiday Tea Recipe in 3 easy steps:

1. Place a handful of mulling spices and a handful of wildcrafted chaga mushroom (small chunks, cut and sifted, or granules) into your pot. Add spring water and simmer for 15-30 minutes or more. Add more water if brewing for more time – it’s okay to brew longer.

2. Let cool slightly (not burning hot, just very warm) and pour through a very fine strainer (or nut mylk bags) into a ceramic mug.

3. Add a tiny pinch of sea salt and a few pinches or drops of stevia extract to taste. Taste test and serve to everyone (You don’t even have to tell them how healthy it is!) for the best holiday cheer as we advance into the new year!

BONUS SECTION:

For those of you not satisfied with just chaga and mulling spices (and you know who you are), you can add in my new product Longevity in a Bottle. Simply add in 1-3 teaspoons while the tea simmers. It will impart a bit of a root beer flavor to your holiday tea but it won’t throw off the flavor. Yes, you can heat/cook/simmer Longevity in a Bottle without messing with its properties. It’s a good and fun idea actually. Enjoy!

To you taking your health to the next level throughout the holidays this year!

I loved a cold glass of chocolate milk as a kid. And I still do, but these days I love recipes for vitality, immunity, and longevity that are very low in sugar and rich in superfoods. I have nothing against raw organic dairy but it gives me a bit of an allergic reaction so I chose to make this a non-dairy, nut/seed mylk based recipe. I present to you: my Superfood Chocolate Mylk in 2 easy steps:

STEP 1: Put in a blender and blend for 1 minute:

2 1/2 cups spring water

2 cups spring water ice cubes

3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon soaked organic raw almonds (or 1/2 cup dry raw almonds, soaked 12 hours)

1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon raw cacao powder (fine powder)

2 teaspoons hemp seeds

2 teaspoons MELTED raw cacao butter

2 teaspoons organic cold-pressed olive oil

1 teaspoon lucuma powder

1/2 teaspoon Yoga Manna, Crystal Manna or algae of choice

1/2 teaspoon reishi extract powder or Longevity in a Bottle (coming soon!)

1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder

1/8 teaspoon sea salt

1 small pinch organic cinnamon powder

STEP 2: Strain through 2 nut mylk bags (1 inside the other to create a 2-layered stronger bag) into a bowl, pour into glasses and serve fresh! Use the pulp left in the nut mylk bags as food for your compost.

Enjoy this fantastic combination of comfort food and superfood (your favorite combination, right?!)

A toast to your vitality!

Herein describes the ingredients of my new leading-edge nutrition product, Longevity in a Bottle, and why I chose a whopping 60 of them.

Longevity in a Bottle is designed to de-stress you, give you long-burning energy, nourish your immune system, revitalize your cells and promote longevity like nothing else you have ever experienced. To do this, I’m not going to rely on just one great superfood or one great tonic herb, but rather the many greatest superfoods and herbs from the greatest ancient nutritional systems from around the world.

I have lived the last several years of my life consuming these herbs and superfoods in various forms. I chose to take very potent extracts of my favorite (and historically, the favorite of these top medicinal traditions) and combine them into a balanced and synergistic form safe and recommended for daily use so that you can experience the benefits of these super substances your ancestors spent generations perfecting the use of. Longevity in a Bottle is one culmination of humanity’s ability to share our greatest traditions together (That’s a big part of the American dream)!

I’ll be using the word “Jing” in the definitions of many of these herbs. In Chinese tonic herbalism, jing is one of the “three treasures” of life energies that govern the vitality of your human experience. Jing is the essence of your physical body and needs to be nourished to promote longevity, sexual and hormonal vitality, and kidney health. Think of jing as your youth, and think of it metaphorically as the wax of a candle. Jing is burned daily (faster with stress), you must continue to build it up or it will eventually burn out.

Eucommia Bark

Eucommia Bark Extract – Eucommia ulmoides: Made from a latexy bark. Powerful joint and tissue building jing tonic from Chinese tonic herbalism.

American Ginseng Root Extract – Panax quinquefolium: The cooling type of ginseng from North America which causes serious jing building and massive adaptability response in your body to stress, which is why ginseng is the most famous tonic herb in the west (for all the western people who experience the stress of modern western lifestyles.)

Panax Ginseng Root Extract – Panax ginseng: The warming type of ginseng from Asia. See above.

Prepared He Shou Wu Root Extract – Polygonum multiflorum: A near-black substance that richly nourishes the kidneys and causes bliss. Epic jing building herb.

Prepared Rehmannia Root Extract – Rehmannia glutinosa: Considered “the kidney’s own food” in Chinese medicine, this is the most grounding and restorative herb ever. To nourish the kidneys is like recharging your battery packs.

Astragalus Root Extract – Astragalus membranaceus: Studies show that astragalus is the quintessential herb for DNA repair. Check out my article on it HERE.

Agaricus blazei

Agaricus Blazei Mushroom Fruitbody Extract – Agaricus blazei/subrufescens: One of the richest in polysaccharides (pure immune system food) of all the medicinal mushrooms.

Red Asparagus root Extract – Asparagus cochinchinensis: The “flying de-stress herb.” This bliss-inducing jing substance also makes a great aphrodisiac. Check out my article on it HERE.

Goji Berry Extract – Lycium barbarum: All the fun of goji berries but in a concentrated form rich in polysaccharides. Boosts human growth hormone and bio-potentiates all other herbs and food consumed with it.

Turkey Tail Mushroom Fruitbody Extract  – Trametes versicolor: A very well studied mushroom. It is incredible in the case of tumors and does wonders for liver health.

Cordyceps Mycelium Extract – Ophiocordyceps sinensis: This is an excellent jing tonic and immune system modulator. Wild cordyceps mushrooms are about a $million a pound, so we grow cordyceps techie style and make a potent extract of the mycelial biomass.

Gynostemma

Gynostemma Leaf Extract  – Gynostemma pentaphyllum: This is just like ginseng in effect, but from a leaf. It’s been studied almost as much as green tea, but it has no caffeine and has lots more adaptogenic effects.

Schisandra Berry Extract – Schisandra chinensis: The 5-flavored berry. Because it contains all 5 flavors it has a broad spectrum of effects from its diverse medicinal constituents. It is considered the most well-rounded, most powerful herb in Chinese tonic herbalism.

Poria Mushroom Extract – Wolfiporia extensa: This fungus grows on the roots of pine trees. It has all the immune system benefits of a medicinal mushroom and also calms the mind and soothes digestion.

Horstetail Extract – Equisetum arvense: High highest source of bioavailable silica in nature. Silica is the beauty and youth mineral. It’s a plant, by the way. Longevity in a Bottle is a vegan product.

Red Sage Root Extract – Salia Miltiorrhizae: This herb massively increases circulation in the body.

Jujube Fruit Extract – Ziziphus zizyphus: Jujube is nourishing by itself, but has been used for thousands of years in Chinese tonic herbalism to balance and bio-potentiate other ingredients in an herbal formula thus providing for a more well-rounded effect.

Eleuthero Root Extract – Eleutherococcus senticosus: Provides a deep calm energy in the body helping the body adapt to stress and physical excursion.

Maitake Mushroom Fruitbody Extract – Grifola frondosa: More immune system food.

Maitake mushroom

Cistanche Extract – Cistanche deserticola: A potent aphrodisiac and jing replenisher.

Morinda Root Extract – Morindae officinalis: Pure jing to build up your lifeforce.

Rhodiola Extract – Rhodiola rosea: One of the top cold-climate-growing herbs for athletes that builds jing and aids in the oxygenation process of the body.

Shiitake Mushroom Fruitbody Extract –  Lentinula edodes: Another famous source of polysaccharides to make your immune system intelligent.

White Atractylodes Root Extract – Atractylodes macrocephala: Very revitalizing, energizing and digestion boosting.

Noni Fruit Extract – Morinda citrifolia: This is the superfruit of the Pacific coastal medicinal traditions. It’s loaded with polysaccharides and sulfur (the beauty and tissue repair mineral).

Maca Root 10:1 Extract – Lepidium meyenii: The concentrated water-alcohol extract of maca for hormone balancing and core energy.

Wild-Mimicked Chaga Extract – Inonotus obliquus: The “King of Mushrooms” is rich in antioxidants, polysaccarides and a host of other substances including melanin to support beauty and immune system robustness. Russia has done countless studies on chaga, proving it to be one of the most important herbs ever used.

Shilajit Extract: A natural mineral pitch which slowly oozes out of rock over eons is high in fulvic and humic acids which promote detoxification. The “rock invincible” (Shilajit is a Sanskrit word) is often considered the #1 herb in Ayurveda.

Organic Reishi Mushroom Fruitbody ExtractGanoderma lucidum: The Queen of the mushrooms that builds jing while providing mental calm and focus. Rieshi “works on you” over months of daily consumption to help dispel bad habits. Our organic reishi is sustainabley grown on many different herbs (instead of logs) to increase its nutrient content and is triple extracted to attain a very high polysaccharide content.

Organic Reishi Mushroom Cracked-Cell SporesGanoderma lucidum: The spores of reishi are considered many times more immune system modulating than anything ever discovered.

Pine Pollen 10:1 Extract – Pinus massoniana: The stuff is magical. Pine pollen gently boost testosterone and help curb excessive estrogens in both men and women.

Organic Amla Berry Extract – Phyllanthus emblica: Rich in vitamin C and used in almost every Ayurvedic herbal formula as a well-rounding and bio-potentiating ingredient.

Organic Ashwagandha Extract – Withania somnifera: Sometimes called “Indian ginseng,” this supertonic root provides the immune system and long-burning energy support we’re looking for.

Organic Holy Basil Extract – Ocimum tenuiflorum: Also known as Tulsi, this is the ultimate vitality tonic in Ayurveda.

Mucuna

Nothing hits the nostalgia button at the end of summer quite like fresh snow cones. But of course genetically modified high-glycemic syrup with tap water ice is too old school for us. We want low glycemic superfood herbal snow cones!

This just in: you can make them yourself at home.

First make the tonic herb syrup. This is the non-glycemic version:

-2 tablespoons spring water

-1 tablespoon reishi extract powder (for super immunity, mental calm)

-1 tablespoon astragalus extract powder (for immune system modulation, DNA repair)

-1/4 teaspoon KAL stevia extract powder (non-glycemic sweetener)

-1 tiny pinch sea salt

OPTIONAL: If you have wintergreen tincture or extract, use a tiny bit for a fully traditional root beer flavor.

Place in a mortar and pestle and lightly grind for 1 minute until all the powders are dissolved.

That syrup version is intensely herbal and rich in stevia (which I love!). If you are not used to stevia or the bitterness of some herbs like reishi, use this version:

-1 tablespoon spring water

-1 – 4 tablespoons (to taste) wholesome syrup (coconut nectar, clear agave (the most neutral flavored), sunchoke syrup, maple syrup)

-1 tablespoon reishi extract powder

-1 tablespoon astragalus extract powder

-1 tiny pinch sea salt

-OPTIONAL: 1 pinch KAL stevia extract powder

OPTIONAL: If you have wintergreen tincture or extract, use a tiny bit for a fully traditional root beer flavor.

Place in a mortar and pestle and lightly grind for 1 minute until all the powders are dissolved.

Shaved ice:

If you have an ice shaver, use that. Otherwise if you have a food processor with a regular metal blade, place a couple handfuls of spring water ice cubes and let it rip until the ice cubes are powdered.

Form the powdered/shaved ice into balls and place in small bowls. Drizzle with syrup and serve on a hot day (or a warm night!)

For an even more exotic “root beer” flavor, use Longevity in a Bottle instead of reishi and astragalus.

The herb of youth and sustained energy is astragalus root (Astragalus membranaceus, syn. Astragalus propinquus). It has been used in China for thousands of years as a whole body supertonic, that strengthens muscle and improves metabolic functions. Today, astragalus root extract has been recognized by scientists all around the world who have proved:

  • Sliced and dried astragalus root

Astragalus extracts are immuno-modulating, rich in stress-reducing adaptogenic compounds that help regenerate cell function and healing.

  • A potent extract contains astragaloside IV, one of astragalus’ most notable compounds proven to increase immune system response to many viruses and boost cell function.
  • Some proprietary extracts contain a blend of molecules called TA-65, which have ben shown to have age-reversing effects, including halting the shortening of DNA telomeres, if not increasing telomere length, which increases the potential lifespan of cells in humans so that they can divide (reproduce) more times without senescence.
  • It greatly relieves fatigue and is used by athletes all around the world for peak performance.

In my experience, astragalus provides a long-burning, happy energy with no come-down (I do not notice when it leaves my system). My body feels charged but not over stimulated, and my mind is clear.

You can grow astragalus in your own garden.

BONUS benefits of astragalus:

  • It’s a non-bitter, almost caramel-flavored herb. Whether it’s a potent extract powder, tincture, or a tea you make yourself, astragalus’ delightful flavor increases compliance (herbs only work when you take them).
  • It’s relatively inexpensive compared to some other herbs. You can get Mountain Rose Herbs bulk astragalus on the cheap (get a few pounds) so you can make your own tea decoction everyday at home.
  • A perennial, you can grow your own astragalus in your garden with just about any weather and climate condition.
  • Since astragalus is a supertonic herb, it can be used daily and safely with cumulative youthening benefits over a long lifetime.

I use a high quality potent extract of astragalus root in my formula, Longevity in a Bottle. Fans of my work are raving about Longevity in a Bottle and are super excited for it to finally be launched.
